The design of the machine is remarkably simple. The workpiece is loaded into the machine. A quickly adjustable stop with pneumatic locking centers the workpiece in the machine. After activating a foot switch, the workpiece is clamped pneumatically and automatically transported to the drilling unit (30 m/min). The vertical spindles drill from below, ensuring that chips do not remain on the workpiece as is the case with machining centres. The horizontal spindles work on two sides of the workpiece. The workpiece length can be unlimited, as it is fed to the drilling unit (= X axis). The drilling spindles can be individually or block programmed and move along the Y axis. Drilling depth and horizontal drills are controlled by the Z axis. Once all drilling operations are completed, the workpiece is transported back to the infeed side or, if desired, to the outfeed side. Unlike conventional machining centres, where the workpiece is clamped using vacuum and the vacuum pods have to be adjusted to match the workpiece size, this step is completely eliminated on the 3-axis CNC point-to-point drilling machine.
